adora, sometimes she-ra ([personal profile] swordjock) wrote in [community profile] boxitup 2020-07-02 01:13 pm (UTC)

This was a bad idea from the start. Adora isn't built for spying, all clumsy muscle and the itch to solve her problems by hitting them. (She's been working on her patience, but it's hard when punching is so much more gratifying.) She-Ra can do a lot of things, but she can't teleport like Glimmer, can't move with Catra's agility, so Adora just tries to make herself as small as possible while she sneaks inside the makeshift base, ducking behind the nearest stack of crates and holding her breath.

She counts to five, and when no shout goes up, no alarm sounds, she finally exhales. So far, so good--she even lets herself smile when Catra orders the other soldiers away, leaving the two of them alone. Okay. Show me what you're planning, Catra, she thinks, peering over the top of the boxes... right before Catra's hand whips out and grabs her jacket, yanking her out from behind her hiding place.

Instinctively, Adora reaches for the bracer on her arm, ready to transform it back into her sword. To defend herself. To stop Catra, whatever the cost. Only... Catra doesn't attack. She acts like Adora is meant to be here, going about her business as usual, and Adora wonders if some weird magic is at work, or if Catra's finally lost it after the portal incident. If she has--some part of her feels bad about using that to her advantage, but she shrugs it off. No weakness is sacred. Not anymore.

"Uh-- yes! Those tracks. The tracks for the Rebellion."

Looking at Catra up close like this--has she been sleeping? at all?--Adora can't help the pang of guilt she feels at the state her former best friend is in, but she reminds herself that she isn't responsible for it. Catra made her choices. Even now, away from the front lines, she's continuing to hurt people. However much Adora cared, will always care, Etheria as a whole is her priority. If Catra can't accept that, it's on her, not Adora.

In her head, she tries to picture Bow and Glimmer's positions right now. Are they walking into a trap? It's too vague a statement. She needs more to go off--and that means playing along, extracting whatever information she can, and then getting out of here. Ideally without setting Catra off.

"Which... tracks are we talking about, exactly?" She tries to sound more confident than she feels, stealing a glimpse at Catra's device over her shoulder. "There's just so many, it's hard to keep everything straight. You know how it is."

Catra's always complained about her underlings being useless--maybe she'll buy it, or at least be too frustrated to interrogate her further.
